Hempfield Area School Board members approved a health and safety plan that will not require students and staff to wear masks in school during the upcoming year.
The plan, unanimously approved during Monday’s school board meeting, will allow parents to decide if they want their child to wear a mask while in school buildings. Students will be required to wear masks while riding on school buses, per a federal order.
“That is an order we do have to follow, but we’ll provide the option for families otherwise,” said Superintendent Tammy Wolicki.

A Hempfield Area middle school is closed Friday due to positive for covid-19 cases, according to district officials.
Students at West Hempfield Middle School will attend classes remotely Friday after district administration was informed that two students at the school contracted the virus and were at school while infectious, according to a letter from Superintendent Tammy Wolicki. Officials will use the time to complete contact tracing and to mitigate spread of the virus.
West Hempfield students will return to in-person learning Monday.
