(WKBW) — The Cattaraugus County Sheriff s Office says an 80-year-old man is dead after a plane crashed shortly after take off from the Great Valley Airport, Wednesday afternoon. The Cattaraugus County Sheriff s Office says William H. Mandelare of Brockport was killed when a plane crashed on a runway shortly after takeoff around 2:30 p.m. Officials say the pilot, 72-year-old Raymond E. Groetsch, also of Brockport was airlifted to Erie County Medical Center via Mercy Flight. Witnesses say they took off shortly after having lunch.

NTSB to send investigator to scene of plane crash | News, Sports, Jobs

editorial@observertoday.com The National Transportation Safety Board said it is sending an air safety investigator to the scene of a single-engine plane crash that killed one person and seriously injured another Wednesday afternoon in Cattaraugus County. The NTSB in a message posted to Twitter said the member would arrive today in Great Valley to “begin the on-scene phase of the investigation.” According to the Olean Times Herald, the Cessna 177 crashed shortly after taking off around 2 p.m. from the Great Valley Airport, located north of Salamanca. A witness told the Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office that the plane appeared to have struggled upon taking off from the private air port.

According to the sheriff's office, two ferrets, five snakes, two bearded dragons, several cats, a chameleon, a lizard, numerous pet rats, a chinchilla, a degu, around seven rabbits, some of which are pregnant, two dogs and eight puppies were all removed from the home.
