FBI agents face danger executing search warrants, experts say
Sometimes tragedies like the one in Sunrise can’t be avoided

MIRAMAR, Fla. – University of Miami criminology professor Alex Piquero says that executing warrants is among the most dangerous calls for service for the FBI and other agencies.
“Law enforcement personnel don’t know what is on the other side of that door,” said Piquero, a criminologist for more than 25 years and chair of UM’s sociology department.
After two FBI special agents were killed and three others injured Tuesday morning serving a warrant in Sunrise, Local 10 News spoke to several experts about these perilous situations.
The suspect killed in Sunrise, Fla., used a doorbell camera to monitor approaching FBI agents who came to serve a federal warrant, using an assault-style weapon to fire through the unopened door, law enforcement sources told the Miami Herald.
The two FBI agents who sustained multiple gunshot wounds and were hospitalized following a deadly shooting in South Florida Tuesday were released from the hospital Wednesday, a spokesman for the FBI s Miami field office told Fox News.
Two other FBI agents, 36-year-old agent Daniel Alfin and 43-year-old agent Laura Schwartzenberger, were killed in the early-morning shooting. Another FBI agent was also injured but was treated at the scene.

FBI Special Agents Daniel Alfin and Laura Schwartzenberger, who died in a Sunrise, Florida shootout Tuesday, devoted their careers to investigating crimes against children.
The two were killed at an apartment complex executing a federal search warrant. Three other agents were wounded, two of whom were transported to the hospital and have since been released.
