Facebook Share STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. Famed U.S. architect Ernest Flagg left his mark on Todt Hill from his Colonial-revival Flagg estate at 209 Flagg Place to more modest homes and cottages along the east shore. Ernest Flagg was born in Brooklyn in 1857, studied architecture at Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and took on some notable projects early in his career. One was the classic Singer Building and Tower, which was the world’s tallest building, at 612 feet, in 1908 at 149 Broadway and Liberty Street in downtown Manhattan.

Favorite 5 Cool Spaces of 2020 Updated Dec 30, 2020; Facebook Share STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. This was an interrupted year in so many ways. When people stopped entering each other’s homes and started social distancing, I had to rethink what is cool about home spaces from the outside. Of the topics highlighted this year, my favorite stories were; the architect Ernest Flagg, the mansard rooftops, Tudor homes, front porches (where we spent most of our days in 2020), and one we got inside before the pandemic, Casa Belvedere. I encourage getting on your warmest winter coats, masks, and boots and walking around your neighborhood this winter to take a look at the different styles of architecture that you live around.
