Massive iceberg calves off Antarctica - New York Daily News

It’s an … iceberg! A new biggest-in-the-world hunk of ice has been born – bigger than Rhode Island or the Spanish island of Majorca, three times larger than Los Angeles, and nearly 80 times the size of Manhattan – as a piece has sheared off Antarctica’s Ronne Ice Shelf, satellite photos show.

Giant Ice from Antarctica Now Makes World s Largest Iceberg

The iceberg named A-76 is located west of Ronne Ice Shelf, Weddell Sea, in Antarctica and measured around 4320 sq km in size, which now makes the largest berg according to the European Space Agency (ESA).

Coastal News Today | Int l - World s largest iceberg forms in Antarctica – and it s bigger than Majorca

The world’s biggest iceberg has formed in the Weddell Sea in Antarctica – and it’s bigger than Majorca and nearly three times the size of Greater London. The 4,320 square kilometre berg, dubbed A-76, was formed when it ‘calved’ from the western side of the Ronne Ice Shelf on Thursday last week. Spotted in images captured by the EU’s Copernicus polar-orbiting Sentinel satellites, the iceberg is around 170 km in length and 25 km wide, making it slightly larger than the Spanish island of Majorca. The enormity of the berg makes it the largest in the world, being 11 per cent bigger than the previous title holder the A-23A iceberg – which was approximately 3880 sq km and was also located in the Weddell Sea. It is almost as wide as the minimum width of the Dover Strat, which measures 33.3 km across.
