San Diego to get new âNavy Mayorâ in change of command Friday

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (Tribune News Service) â The San Diego-based Navy command in charge of the serviceâs bases across California and Nevada is changing hands, as one Navy admiral heads into retirement and another takes the reins in a role sometimes described as the âNavy Mayorâ of San Diego.
Rear Adm. Stephen Barnett will assume command of Navy Region Southwest at a ceremony Friday at Naval Air Station North Island, the Navy said in a statement. He most recently served as the commander of Navy Region Northwest in Kitsap, Wash. and was the commanding officer of Naval Base Coronado from 2015 to 2016.

2 VENTURA COUNTY, Calif. (NNS) – Naval Base Ventura County (NBVC) welcomed its newest leader Capt. Robert “Barr” Kimnach III, while celebrating the retirement of its departing leader Capt. Jeff Chism at Point Mugu, July 8, 2021.
Rear Adm. Bette Bolivar, commander, Navy Region Southwest, served as the guest speaker and officiated the change of command during a ceremony attended by military personnel, distinguished visitors, and civilian guests.
“Capt. Chism has taken community engagement to the highest level,” said Bolivar. “With Jeff at the helm, this installation excelled, made many accomplishments and exceeded all expectations. His achievements have truly reflected our mission and enabled warfighter readiness. Jeff’s vision of Ventura County has been unmatched.”
