A female cadet received the top performing award among the 19 Philippine Coast Guard (PCG)-sponsored cadets of the Philippine Merchant Marine Academy (PMMA) “Sinagkalan” Class of 2021.
During the commencement exercises on Wednesday, July 28, MC/1 Mona Catherine Manuta received the “Coast Guard Saber Award” for being the top performing student among the 19 PCG-PMMA sponsored cadets.

President Duterte has approved the promotion of two female officers to become the first women generals of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG).
Commodores Luz Escarilla and Fran Eden were among the eight PCG officers promoted on February 26 to the rank of Commodore, or equivalent to Brigadier General in the military.

Escarilla is assigned to the Coast Guard Civil Relations Service while Eden is with Coast Guard Medical Service.
As both of them are physicians, PCG spokesperson Commodore Armand Balilo said they have been frontliners for the agency since the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic started.

Ensign Ralph O. Barajan received the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea at the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) in Pasay City on Wednesday, Feb. 24.
Barajan was off-duty when he saved 62 lives aboard an ill-fated passenger vessel MV Siargao Princess in the waters of Cebu on Nov. 7, 2019.
Present during the awarding were Assistant Secretary Igor Bailen and John Francis Herrera of the DFA – Maritime and Oceans Affairs Office, as well as Chief of Coast Guard Staff, Rear Admiral Rolando Lizor Punzalan.
The IMO Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea is an annual international recognition for individuals who performed “acts of exceptional bravery, risking their own lives to ensure safety of life at sea, and to prevent or mitigate marine environmental damages.”

According to the PCG, the purpose of the dole out was to provide support to the fishermen and their families following the devastation caused by Typhoon Quinta last year, on top of the ongoing pandemic.
Each relief pack contained rice, noodles, canned goods, hygiene kits, and other grocery supplies.
The relief operation was successfully carried out thanks to the efforts of the Coast Guard District Southern Tagalog, Coast Guard Public Affairs, Deputy Chief of Coast Guard Staff for Civil Relations Service, Coast Guard Logistics Systems Command, PCG Auxiliary 128th Squadron, Statues and Collectibles Alliance of the Philippines (SCALPH), and Resorts Owner Association of Mabini, Batangas.
