I remember watching Backstrom and wanting to like it, but I just found the gross disregard for people’s rights very off-putting. Sure, disregard for the rules is a long-running toxic theme in American detective dramas (which is why I don’t like most American detective/crime dramas), but I recall feeling Backstrom took it even farther than usual, especially for current times. They made him too much of a jerk and a loser, so it was hard to understand why he still had a job.

Untitled comes directly from the collection of Samantha McEwen, who lived on Broome Street, New York City, with Keith Haring and his partner Juan DuBose from 1980 to 1983. This work on paper is an incredibly rare, visual conversation between Basquiat and Haring, and only a small handful of works by this pair are in existence. Untitled was recently exhibited in Keith Haring | Jean-Michel Basquiat: Crossing Lines, at
