KILLEEN, Texas Boards took quite the beating at Axed Out Texas in Killeen over the weekend as the venue hosted its first national tournament.
It brought out some of the top competitors from Texas and even a few spots across the country. Owners Kyle and Ashley Bower were happy to give their town the spotlight in the axe-throwing community.
“To bring them to our little venue in Killeen and get to show them our home and our home venue and what we ve built and share it with the community, that’s something we are very proud of, Kyle Bower said.

Lights Out Nights,” which run now through May 7 by order of Mayor Sylvester Turner. As the name implies, Lights Out Nights aims to help traveling birds by encouraging Houstonians to switch off non-essential exterior lights from 11 am to 6 pm nightly during peak migration season. As most North American birds travel at night, the lights can disorient them and cause fatal collisions with buildings.
According to Mayor Johnson, these birds must contend with light pollution that attracts and disorients them, making them vulnerable to collisions with buildings and other urban threats.
Peer reviewed research estimates that up to one billion birds die in collisions with buildings in the United States annually, Johnson said in a proclamation.
According to one study, Dallas was ranked third of the 125 most populous American cities for exposing migrating birds to light pollution.
Dallas, which is recognized as one of the seven cities certified as a “Bird City” by Texas Parks and Wildlife, is joining an international Lights Out effort by turning off non-essential lighting during critical migration periods.
