Proposal to extend passenger rail into Androscoggin County picks up steam among state legislators

Submitted photo A proposal to extend passenger rail service to Lewiston and Auburn isn’t exactly on the fast track, but it is chugging along after lawmakers this week backed further study of the idea. The $180,000 proposal would build on a 2019 study of rail options between Portland and the state’s second largest metropolitan area to require the state Department of Transportation to provide “an economic evaluation of commuter and passenger rail service” on the route by next March. Proponents hope that with a solid plan in place, the state may be able to grab a chunk of cash from President Joe Biden’s $80 billion initiative to bolster rail travel across the country, which has yet to win congressional approval.

Proposal to extend rail to Bangor advancing in Maine

Proposal to extend rail to Bangor advancing in Maine May 24, 2021 FacebookTwitterEmail BANGOR, Maine (AP) A proposal to consider the feasibility of a passenger rail service from southern Maine to Bangor is advancing through the Maine Legislature. Democratic Sen. Joe Baldacci of Bangor has proposed a study of the potential of building the rail, which could run from Brunswick to Augusta, Waterville and Bangor. A legislative committee unanimously passed the proposal late last week. Baldacci said “passenger rail to Bangor is long overdue.” Major questions exist about the project, though, such as how much it would cost and what its environmental impact would be. Baldacci said his proposal gives “a necessary, in-depth look at what the strengths and impediments of building this would look like.”
