Our View: Commissioners were right to be disappointed

Green River Star -   July 22, 2021 Imagine having to hire someone for a job and there is a selection of people vying for the position. One would expect everyone seeking the job would be interested in actually having the job, right? This wasn’t the situation the Sweetwater County Commissioners faced in choosing a candidate for Sweetwater County Treasurer Tuesday. Mike Masterson, one of the three candidates chosen by members of the Sweetwater County Democratic Party, told the Commissioners he wouldn’t accept the role if they chose him. This effectively left the Commissioners with two legitimate options to select from.

Barbuto selected as county treasurer

Green River Star -   July 22, 2021 Rock Springs resident Joe Barbuto will be the next Sweetwater County Treasurer, filling the remainder of Robb Slaughter’s term. The Sweetwater County Commissioners voted 4-1 to appoint Barbuto following public interviews they conducted with candidates recommended by the Sweetwater County Democratic Party. Barbuto started his term Wednesday. Slaughter announced plans to retire in June, with his final day as the county treasurer being July 1. Because the elected position is partisan and Slaughter is a Democrat, the Sweetwater County Democratic Party was tasked with providing three candidates for the Commissioners to chose from. Joining Barbuto in vying for the job were Meghan Jensen and Mike Masterson. Of the three, two are ranking members of the Democratic Party, with Barbuto being the chairman of the Wyoming Democratic Party and Jensen being the chairperson of the Sweetwater County Democrats. Joe Barbuto Appointed as Sweetwater County Treasurer

SWEETWATER COUNTY  Joe Barbuto was appointed by the Sweetwater County Commission in a 4-1 vote to fill the open Sweetwater County Treasurer position during the Commission’s meeting Tuesday. Former Treasurer Robb Slaughter announced his resignation and retirement in June, and his last day was July 1, 2021. The Sweetwater County Democratic Party then started its search for three candidates to take over the position until the 2022 election. Meghan Jensen, the Sweetwater County Democratic Party Chair, said after searching for people to put their name in to be considered for the position, they only received two names. One was Joe Barbuto, and the other was Dave Gray.
