Thompson pleads not guilty

Billy Thompson, a former Scioto County Sheriff’s Office corrections officer, received a sign-on bond of $100,000 during Tuesday’s arraignment from presiding Judge Howard Harcha.
PORTSMOUTH As a result of Tuesday’s arraignment, a former Scioto County Sheriff’s Office corrections officer pleaded not guilty and had his bond set at $100,000.
At the Scioto County Court of Common Pleas, presiding Judge Howard Harcha heard from the defendant, Billy Thompson, and the State of Ohio serving as the prosecution.
In a motion filed on Monday, Margaret Tomaro, special prosecutor from the Ohio Attorney General s Office who is leading this case, said placing the two on community control would demean the seriousness of this offense.
Jason and Julia were both found guilty by visiting Judge Patricia Cosgrove for two felony crimes; one third-degree felony for complicity to tampering with evidence, and one fourth-degree felony for complicity to failure to stop after an accident. Tomaro, in the recommendation, noted the maximum prison sentence for complicity to tampering with evidence is 36 months, while complicity to failure to stop after an accident holds a maximum prison sentence of 18 months.

Britney Haynes. • • • An 18-year-old Hillsboro woman accused of child endangering and felonious assault testified on her own behalf on the second day of a trial in Highland County Common Pleas Court Wednesday, March 10.
Britney Haynes, who was the second and final individual called by the defense to testify, took the stand at approximately 1:51 p.m. Wednesday.
As of Tuesday afternoon last week, 225 people awaiting trial were being held at one of two Greene County jail facilities the downtown jail and the Adult Detention Center. Many of those individuals remained behind bars over the holidays, lacking the bail money that allows release until a scheduled court date.
More specifically, nearly 70% of the people detained in Greene County at the time of a 2018 report conducted amid exploration concerning construction of a new jail were awaiting judgment and were unable to pay bail.
That’s unacceptable, say supporters of a growing movement to change, or completely eliminate, the rules supporting cash bail. And it’s especially egregious during the COVID-19 pandemic, as congregate settings have been shown to be particularly vulnerable to spread of the disease.
