H2Ohio effort to clean up Lake Erie, waterways praised and criticized

When Terry and Ernest Bateson hear rumbling, they know the trucks are coming.  Every year, semi-trucks filled to the brim with liquid manure drive by the retired farmers  home in Wood County s Portage Township. The semi-trucks are carrying waste from the CAFOs, or concentrated animal feeding operations – in layman s terms, factory farms.  The road turns brown from the spillage, Ernest Bateson said.  The number of animals in the Maumee watershed has doubled from 9 to 20 million from 2005 to 2018, a study by environmental advocates found. More animals mean more poop – and the poop has to go somewhere.  Some of the poop is ending up in Lake Erie. Farmers spread manure on the fields as fertilizer, and it runs into the Maumee watershed, which flows into the lake.

Mount Eaton awarded $500,000 to improve residents drinking water

MOUNT EATON – The village is $500,000 closer to improving the drinking water for its residents. Gov. Mike DeWine and Laurie A. Stevenson, director of the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, announced Wednesday two dozen communities in Ohio will receive a total of $9 million in H2Ohio funding for projects to improve the quality of drinking water and to repair or replace aging water, wastewater, and sewage infrastructure. Mount Eaton is set to receive $500,000 to replace aging water infrastructure. Wayne County will receive $150,000 to address failing home sewage treatment systems in low- to moderate-income households. These projects will improve the quality of life for thousands of Ohioans by giving them reliable access to clean water and by addressing failing wastewater and home sewage treatment systems which are also a threat to public health and the environment, DeWine said in a press release.
