The state economy continues to reopen slowly despite health officials warnings.
Oregon is continuing to slowly return to normal even as health officials warn the COVID-19 pandemic is far from over.
In Portland, both the Saturday Market and Oaks Amusement Park reopened with precautions on Saturday, April 17. Saturday Market reopened in Tom McCall Waterfront Park under sunny skies with the number of vendors limited to 160. And Oaks Amusement Park in Sellwood reopened at 15% capacity.
At the same time, the Associated Press reported a top state health official is considering indefinitely extending rules requiring masks and social distancing in all businesses. Many other states in the country are easing such restrictions, however.
SALEM â Gov. Kate Brown on Friday, April 16 acknowledged the alarming rise of COVID-19 in Oregon which one new forecast predicts will exceed more than 1,200 new cases per day and 300 actively hospitalized patients in the next several weeks.
During a live-streamed news conference, Brown said she is sticking by her decision earlier this month to loosen restrictions prohibiting indoor dining at bars and restaurants in counties with the highest COVID-19 rates because she wants to avoid a repeat from this past winter when such measures effectively âclosed the economy down.â
âAs always, this is a balancing (act),â she said.
Further bolstering her resolve: Brown noted about 23% of the stateâs residents are fully vaccinated and she has faith in the stateâs residents to act safely.
