CHICAGO â When YermÃn Mercedes became the first player in modern history to start a season with eight consecutive hits, we waited for the Chicago White Sox rookie to come back to earth.
And when he finished April being named the American League Rookie of the Month, we waited for the law of averages to kick in.
Sooner or later, the waiting is going to have to stop.
While Mercedes has come down from his .417 average in April, he still led the majors at .376 entering Thursdayâs 4-2 win over the Minnesota Twins and had hit .333 since the record-breaking 8-for-8 start.

CHICAGO - The Chicago White Sox and the Chicago Cubs will be increasing capacity to 60% at Guaranteed Rate Field and Wrigley Field starting at the end of May.
The White Sox say the allotment of approximately 24,300 fans at the field will begin Monday, May 24 against the St. Louis Cardinals. We have been working toward this moment and have always looked forward to welcoming more fans back to Guaranteed Rate Field in a safe and responsible way, said Brooks Boyer, White Sox chief revenue and marketing officer. We have seen great success providing a safe and enjoyable gameday experience for guests in April, and as we see more people get vaccinated, we are thrilled to bring more fans into the ballpark to experience White Sox baseball in person and cheer on our first-place team on the field.
