TOKYO â In one of sporting historyâs greatest upsets, a 26-year-old crewcut Marine lieutenant, Billy Mills, ran an Olympic record 28:24.4 10,000 meters to take gold in Tokyo on Oct. 14, 1964.
â10,000-Meter Thriller â MILLS SCORES UPSETâ proclaimed the front page of Stars and Stripes following the race. The story described the victory â the first by the United States at that distance â as âone of the biggest shocks everâ and said nobody expected the young Marine to beat the favorite, Australian world-record holder Ron Clarke.
The next day I go out again. I decide to go along a dirt road that curves around a nearby lake. I stop and pull my phone out to take a photo of the sunset over the lake, and I subconsciously think to myself that I need to post the picture when I put my run up on Strava.
