Livonia council approves leash law, denies pets weather-related help

View Comments Pet owners in Livonia will have to keep their four-legged family members on a leash when not on their own property or at a dog park.  Livonia council voted Monday to adopt a leash law and shot down a proposal that would place some weather restrictions on when homeowners can leave pets outside for an extended period.  Both were brought to council s attention by residents and nonresidents concerned about the wellbeing of dogs and, in the leash law s case, those they come in contact with. The discussion also prompted Livonia s representative in the Michigan Senate, Dayna Polehanki, to propose a pet-related bill intended to protect animals statewide during extreme weather.

Chuck Robertson has never missed one of his daughters swim meets.  “All of us girls would look up to him in the stands and he’d give us a fist pump before a race, his oldest, Sophia Robertson, said.  We’d all give him a fist pump back. He’s the best dad.” Now, Chuck is in the intensive care unit at at St. Mary Mercy Hospital in Livonia following complications with COVID-19. He s been in the hospital for about 40 days, over half of which has been spent on a ventilator that is doing all of his breathing for him. 

Redford Union board makes Witt superintendent despite unpopularity

Teachers have argued Witt, a trained lawyer, does not have the background or training needed to run a school district. Witt has been with Redford Union since October 2019, at which time he was hired as assistant superintendent of human resources.  Witt did not return a call requesting comment.  It s unfortunate, said Steve Losey, the president of the educators union. Elections have consequences and the students, staff and community members will feel those consequences after four elected officials made their choice last night. According to Losey, attendees wanting to participate in public comment were allowed in the building two at a time but could not watch the open meeting live. The board limited capacity inside its meeting room because of the pandemic. 

Oakland County Child Killer focus of new podcast by Livonia native

Eddie White, 24, wasn t alive when four children were kidnapped and killed in the late 1970s by a person or persons since dubbed the Oakland County Child Killer. He knows many people his age who aren t familiar with the case at all.  So White started a podcast, called The Forever Children of Oakland County, to bring the infamous cold case to a new generation.  “It’s really just to raise awareness, he said.  I think it’s important as a young man who grew up in Livonia where Tim King’s body was found  and I’ve lived in Rochester Hills to start bringing this case to a new generation. I have a lot of friends my age who don’t really know the story of the Oakland County Child Killer.”

For decades, investigators have been working to find out who the serial killer is and if he’s still alive. Those who knew the victims were forever changed by what happened during those 13 months. Four children were abducted and murdered with their bodies left in various locations within, or near Oakland County. There were at least two other murder cases that investigators believe may have been connected.
