In the spring of her junior year, ETHS student Carmiya Bady was supposed to play Velma Kelly in “Chicago” but the pandemic closed schools before the show could begin. Countless performances, both at ETHS and Evanston’s several community theatres, were subsequently postponed, canceled, or went virtual.
As summer came, with no end to COVID in sight, Tim Rhoze, Fleetwood-Jourdain Theatre’s artistic director, approached Andrew Biliter, the artistic director of Mudlark Theater, with an idea.
Rhoze proposed a partnership between Fleetwood-Jourdain, Mudlark and Piven Theatre Workshop that would provide Evanston high school students the space and funding to devise their own show, with Biliter acting as the devising facilitator.
The finalists are trio Beatrice Overend, Emily Overend and Eleanor Monaghan, Michelle Hammond and Olivia Nicholson. Community-minded students Beatrice, Emily and Eleanor set up Wilsden Youth Volunteers after helping out at a different project throughout the first lockdown. The group - described as “coronavirus angels” - helped decorate the village hall for six weeks, collected and delivered prescriptions and shopping to those who were shielding and fundraised for the village hall by organising a photography competition for a 2021 calendar. Emily said: “We are really thankful to our volunteers and residents who have got involved in our projects to help raise money for our village, find opportunities for the young people and support those who are lonely and vulnerable.

After winning a significant amount of new business during 2020, The Monkeys, part of Accenture Interactive, is growing with new hires and promotions.
Melbourne based senior creative team, Joe Sibley (above right) and Hugh Gurney (above left), have been promoted to joint creative directors. Similarly, Connor Beaver (bottom right) has been promoted to creative director with Scott Zuliani (bottom left), his associate creative director.
Says Ant Keogh, CCO, The Monkeys Melbourne: “It’s a wonderful thing to be able to promote four talented and trusted creatives from within the building, people that have been with us pretty much since the inception of the Melbourne office, or in Hugh’s and Scott’s case, before that, in the Sydney office. These guys have always acted as leaders when it came to the work, so it’s nice, as the office grows, to set it in place officially.”
