How important is an active social life as we get older? The answer might surprise you. Recent studies from Harvard, Brigham Young University, and the National Institute on Aging indicate that the quality of our close relationships and level of daily interaction have a greater impact on our long-term health than diet, exercise, and even our genes. Our interpersonal relationships are a key element to our longevity, and senior living communities are evolving to acknowledge the role that social engagement plays in physical wellness. It is clearer than ever: The comfort of familiar faces and trusted friends fosters a long and healthy life, both emotionally and physically.
Valeria Yackshaw Genetti, 83, Hazleton
