Unpublished COVID-19 Case: 90-Year-Old Belgian Unvaccinated Woman with the Virus Affected with 2 Variants at the Same Time

Close An unpublished COVID-19 case recently showed a 90-year-old unvaccinated woman, after contracting the virus this spring in Europe, was found to have been infected with two variants simultaneously. FOX10 reported the patient s case was presented and discussed at the European Congress on Clinical Microbiology & Infectious Diseases or ECCMID as part of a Belgian study. The woman reported at the hospital after a series of falls and tested positive for COVID-19 too, the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases. When the patient was admitted to the hospital, she had a good health condition and did not exhibit any signs of respiratory distress. Nonetheless, her health started to drop fast, and she died five days after.

Victoria CHO: Case load unlikely to increase by hundreds but absolutely expect more

Victoria’s Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton says he “absolutely expect(s) more” cases to emerge given the Indian variant is supposedly even more virulent than the UK and original strains. The entire state of Victoria will be plunged into a seven-day lockdown from midnight on Thursday after 11 more cases were identified taking the current cluster total to 26. Professor Sutton said the reduction number for this variant was considerably higher than the UK-strain and means one infected individual would on average infect five people, in comparison to around three for the UK-variant. “You don’t want this to move unmitigated by contact tracing, by the restrictions that limit the number of contacts you have,” he said. The chief health officer said he didn’t believe the caseload would increase by the hundreds over the coming days as 10,000 close and primary contacts are tested. “I don’t think we’ll see hundreds, but I absolutely expect more.”

Soapbox: Theatres Need to Strictly Enforce Face Masks Amid New COVID-19 Strains

Before I begin writing this article, I would like to highlight that none of the below should be taken as medical advice. These are my musings over what the industry should do. Greater Brisbane is currently in lockdown for the next three days due to someone unknowingly having and potentially spreading the new, highly-infectious UK-strain of COVID-19. I do not wish to be alarmist, but it is probable that others have been infected with this strain, and that either this lockdown could be extended further or happen again over the coming weeks. Unique among other East Coast states given how efficiently the pandemic was managed to date, performing arts venues and cinemas in Queensland have been able to open with 100% capacity – meaning hundreds or thousands of people could be sitting in close proximity.
