5 Students Selected to Speak at UK Commencement Ceremonies

LEXINGTON, Ky. (May 13, 2021)   Per University of Kentucky tradition, UK President Eli Capilouto has selected student representatives to speak at the UK Commencement Ceremonies May 14-16, at Rupp Arena. Five speakers in total were selected. Each speaker will address two of the 10 ceremonies. Given limitations on the number of people allowed on the stage, the speeches will be pre-recorded. The five student speakers are: Sy Bridenbaugh Bridenbaugh, from Richmond, Kentucky, is graduating with a doctoral degree in educational policy studies and evaluation from the UK College of Education. After suffering a severe football injury in high school, Bridenbaugh contracted a bacterial infection that resulted in losing his leg, and almost his life. After his leg was amputated, he made a decision to direct his passion for football to education. As an amputee, he embraces the unique way he lives his life. UK to Award Honorary Degrees at May 2021 Commencement Ceremonies

LEXINGTON, Ky. (May 6, 2021)   The University of Kentucky Board of Trustees has approved honorary degrees for four citizens who have distinguished themselves in their careers and community service. The recipients are W. Harry Clarke, F. Joseph Halcomb III, Deirdre Lyons and Carl F. Pollard.  Clarke, Halcomb and Lyons will receive their honorary doctorates at the UK May 2021 Commencement Ceremonies next week. UK Army and Air Force ROTC Honor Iwo Jima Veterans With Flag Raising Ceremony

UK Army/Air Force ROTC honor Elwood Woody Hughes and Franklin Sousley, two veterans with Kentucky ties who served in Iwo Jima. LEXINGTON, Ky. (Feb. 25, 2021) This past Tuesday, University of Kentucky Army and Air Force ROTC cadets commemorated the 76th anniversary of the flag raising on Iwo Jima with a flag raising ceremony on the UK campus. The event paid special tribute to two World War II veterans with Kentucky ties: the late Elwood “Woody” Hughes and Franklin Runyon Sousley (1925-1945). Hughes, who died Feb. 2, 2021, at age 95 in Lexington, had planned to raise a flag this Tuesday at Veterans Park Elementary in Lexington to honor those who lost their lives at Iwo Jima. Shortly after his death, schools across Chicago (where he lived most of his life) and beyond received word of his plan, and over 100 flag raising ceremonies were organized. His son, Bill Hughes, rose the flag at Veterans Park Elementary on his father s behalf.
