NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - It’s been a hard year. For those who have already sacrificed so much, this holiday season is looking a little brighter thanks to a local non profit who surprised some military veterans with housing relief.
“We’re going to be paying off your mortgage this month,” said William Stoudt, executive director of Rebuilding Together New Orleans, as he knocked on the door of Army veteran Shawn Goffner-Growe’s house.
The New Orleans City Council voted down two property tax breaks for The Folger Coffee Co. on Thursday but punted its decision on four others into the new year. Hours later, the Orleans Parish School Board rejected all six of the companyâs applications for exemptions that could be worth as much as $25 million over 10 years.
The City Councilâs delay on four of the projects came as members were sharply divided between those seeking more time to bring in company representatives to explain the requests and those favoring an immediate rejection. A key undercurrent was the question of exactly how much revenue City Hall and other taxing agencies would be giving up if the exemptions were granted.

Only about $5.4 million in taxes is actually due, and that would be spread across the myriad taxing entities in the city, according to the Orleans Parish Assessorâs Office. The $12 million figure promoted by Together New Orleans in news conferences, presentations and other public statements was calculated by lumping in two other, unrelated Folgers projects that are not up for a vote and appear to have been abandoned before the company applied for Industrial Tax Exemption Program relief.

Critics said the exemptions were requested for projects that have been finished for years and that would create a minimal number of new jobs for local employees.
Folger s consultant Jimmy Leonard told a meeting of the School Board as a committee of the whole that the company was one of the Top 10 taxpayers in New Orleans. He said it spent significant payroll dollars paying employees who then spend money in the community.
Nine other speakers, however, praised the NOLA Public Schools administration and the School Board when it became apparent that the Folgers request was receiving a cold reception. The administration recommended denying all six Folgers applications.
