Rowing s Tom and Emily Ford selected for Tokyo Olympic Games

Tom and Emily Ford from their visit to The Grange School to officially open the £6m sports centre in 2019 SIBLINGS who started rowing at The Grange School have been selected for the Olympic Games in Tokyo. Tom and Emily Ford are among the 45 rowers selected to feature for Team GB at the delayed Games this summer. Both now represent the Leander club, where they moved to progress their careers as full-time athletes, and it will be their first appearance at an Olympic Games after having represented their country at international level for some time. And the symmetry continues in that they have both been selected in the eights, Tom, 29, in the men s and Emily, 26, in the women s.

The rowers won three gold, three silver and three bronze, while the para crews came away with two gold and one silver. Leander had 31 athletes at the three-day event in Varese, Italy, with 17 picking up medals on the final day on Sunday. Helen Glover, who was making her first competition appearance for five years since the Rio Olympics in 2016, continued her comeback ahead of the Tokyo Games this summer by winning gold.

The title was part of a triumphant return to form for the GB rowing team, with the British para-rowing squad kicking off the medal rush in Varese, Italy on Sunday before the men s four also majestically reclaimed their 2019 title - which they were not able to travel to defend last October - and the day was anchored by a gleeful victory when the men s eight rowed inexorably through Germany.  

European rowing qualifier for Tokyo 2020 confirmed to be held in Varese in April

Friday, 29 January 2021 Varese in Italy has been confirmed as the host of the European Olympic and Paralympic Qualification Regatta and European Rowing Championships in April. The qualifying event for this year s Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo was originally scheduled to take place last year but was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  This followed the postponement of Tokyo 2020 to 2021 as a result of the global health crisis, with the Olympics now scheduled from July 23 to August 8.  The Paralympics will then follow from August 24 to September 5.  Qualifying remains in Varese and will run from April 5 to 7, with the European Rowing Championships then set for April 9 to 11.
