The Raphoe native was rewarded for the success achieved by Ireland’s badminton players during 2019, which saw his siblings, Chloe and Sam, and Nat Nguyen excel on the international stage. That season, the Irish team, under the 36-year-old’s leadership, reached the last eight of the European Mixed Team Championship in Bulgaria. Nguyen reached the men’s singles last-16 at the European Games and Sam and Chloe won bronze in the mixed doubles at the same event.

Denmark retain European Mixed Team Badminton Championship title

Saturday, 20 February 2021 Denmark retained the European Mixed Team Badminton Championship after thumping France in the final in Vantaa, Finland today. Denmark have won this competition 17 times and started strongly in the best of five games tie courtesy of world number two Viktor Axelsen. Axelsen won the men’s singles encounter 21-16 21-12 against European junior champion Christo Popov. The next match, the women’s singles game, also went the Danes way with Mia Blichfeldt victorious in straight games against Qi Xuefei. Despite Xuefei getting her nose in front in the second game, Blichfeldt closed out a 21-18 21-19 victory to put Denmark one game away from retaining their mixed team title.

Netherlands, Scotland, England and Russia reach European Mixed Team Championship

Saturday, 12 December 2020 Russia, England, The Netherlands and Scotland have all qualified for badminton s European Mixed Team Championship after winning their respective qualification groups. The Netherlands finished top of Group 3 following a tight 3-2 victory over the the Czech Republic, which gave them three wins from three. That tie all came down to the women s doubles, and Dutch pairing Debora Jille and Cheryl Seinen defeated Czech duo Sabina Milova and Tallulah Sharleen Van Coppenolle. In the group s other tie in Linz, hosts Austria defeated Slovakia 3-2. Scotland won Group 6 after a thrilling decider versus Spain, coming from 2-1 down to win 3-2.

Beatriz Corralles, a bronze medallist at the 2015 European Games, and Luís Enrique Peñalver - a junior gold medallist in the European Mixed Team Championship - both won singles matches to set Spain on their way, and it was not until the fifth match - mixed doubles - that Portugal earned a consolation win.

After both won their opening matches in Group 6 5-0 yesterday, Spain followed that up with another whitewash victory against Latvia. Portugal, hosting the group in Caldas da Rainha, lost to Scotland 4-1. Spain and Portugal are due to meet tomorrow. Scotland also beat Ukraine 4-1, while Ukraine in turn enjoyed a 5-0 thrashing of Latvia. Three other groups got underway today. In Group 1, hosted by England in Milton Keynes, England made a winning start and beat Hungary 4-1.
