Ahead of sowing of kharif (summer) crops, the government s premier agri-research body ICAR has come out with an advisory to help farmers overcome the impact of the second wave of the pandemic on farm production and their income. During 2021-22, second wave of COVID-19 pandemic is again posing a serious problem to the nation, halting economic activities in one way or the other. The resultant actions may impact agricultural production and consequently national food and nutrition security, said the 400 page advisory prepared by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).
Bharat Biotech had issued a statement saying, “Capacity expansion has been implemented across multiple facilities. to reach 700 million doses a year,” though it did not specify by when. The company did not respond to ETs request for comment.

Synopsis
The government has allocated Rs 2,700 crore in 2021-22 for the price stabilisation fund (psf) used to buy buffer stock of onion and pulses. This is 35% more than the budgetary allocation of 2020-21.
According to the consumer affairs ministry, which tracks prices of food commodities, the price behaviour of onion has nothing to do with production.
The government is planning to buy 2 lakh tonnes of onions for buffer stock in 2021-22 to prevent the price hike and ensure easy availability during festive season when supply is tight.
“In 2019-20, we bought around 57,000 tonnes followed by around one lakh tonnes in 2020-21. In the next fiscal we will buy 2 lakh tonnes to prevent prices going up during festive season,” said consumer affairs secretary Leena Nandan.
The National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC), a cooperatives focused organisation under the Union Agriculture Ministry has roped in ICAR’s Institutions and Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) in 116 blocks for formation and promotion of Farmers Producers Organisations (FPOs) in the country under a central scheme, says a press release issued by NCDC.
Of the total 717 KVKs which have spread across India, 468 are under the administrative control of state agricultural universities, 65 under Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and 22 under central agricultural universities in the country.
As per the NCDC, ICAR Institutes and KVK’s in 116 blocks will work as Cluster Based Business Organizations (CBBOs) under the Central Scheme which was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year with an aim to bring small and marginal farmers into production value chains and help them boost their income.
