Massachusetts High School Student Returns Award at Ceremony
Verda Tetteh, a 17-year-old Fitchburg, Mass., high school student, received a $40,000 merit scholarship at her graduation ceremony. Ms. Tetteh returned the award, saying the money should go to someone pursuing a community college education.
“This award is a $10,000 annual scholarship graciously established by the Progin family in memory of George K. Progin, an alumnus of Fitchburg High School. The award is renewable annually for four years of undergraduate college education. I am very honored to announce this year’s recipients, Verda Tetteh and Zachary Scott.” [applause] “I am so very grateful for this, but I also know that I am not the one who needs this the most, and knowing my mom went to community college and how much that was helpful, I would be so very grateful if administration, would consider giving the general excellence scholarship to someone who is going into community college because I know it is
Students, faculty and staff wanting to participate in upcoming semesters must now be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 at Worcester schools the College of the Holy Cross, Clark University, and Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
The three join Anna Maria College in Paxton, each of the state s public university campuses, including Fitchburg, Framingham and Worcester state universities, and MCPHS University, which has a campus in downtown Worcester. Community colleges, including Mount Wachusett Community College in Gardner and Quinsigamond Community College in Worcester have said they won t require vaccines, not wanting to worsen potential health inequities among members of its campuses.
Clark President David Fithian made the announcement of the vaccine requirement on Thursday in a letter to the campus community, saying everyone had to show their proof of vaccination by July 15.

Anna Maria College in Paxton is the latest to announce it ll require students and employees to be vaccinated in time for the start of the fall semester.
Anna Maria joins Assumption University in Worcester and each of the state s public university campuses, including Fitchburg, Framingham and Worcester state universities. Community colleges, including Mount Wachusett Community College in Gardner and Quinsigamond Community College have said they won t require vaccines, not wanting to worsen potential health inequities among members of its campuses.
For Anna Maria, which announced the decision late Thursday, the vaccines will be required before arriving on campus. The requirement is also in place for overnight campus guests but the college will make medical and religious exemptions.
