COVID-19 exposure notices issued for 34 Surrey schools over long weekend

Earl Marriott In light of these most recent exposures, Fraser Health notes that notification of exposure “does not mean your child has been exposed to COVID-19,” and adds that “no action is required unless you are contacted by Public Health or are otherwise directed by school officials.” Those who do not receive a phone call or letter from Public Health should have their children continue to attend school and monitor for COVID-19 symptoms daily using the BC COVID-19 Health Assessment Tool. The health authority notes that it will contact families directly in the case of any school exposure involving their child.

Good, bad and ugly: We got lots of feedback on the COVID school year

Article content With more than half a million students, 45,000 teachers and thousands more additional staff in B.C.’s K to 12 schools, there may be no one solution that will make everyone comfortable and happy during a pandemic. But what is clear from the deluge of emails, Tweets and Facebook messages we received this week is that anxiety and frustrations are high for many people as students and teachers try to stay safe in crowded classrooms or parents attempt to teach children kept at home. We apologize, but this video has failed to load. BCTF urges Fraser Health to improve safety standards in schools

The BC Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) is calling on the Fraser Health Authority to increase and improve health and safety standards in schools. “This week, tens of thousands of public school employees and hundreds and thousands of public school students returned to school after a two-week winter break,” reads a statement from the BCTF. The group says that while families had a chance to limit exposure to COVID-19 over the winter, now that school has resumed, “they once again face the daily risk of exposure.” “We’re speaking out together in solidarity for those members who are working in the schools where health and safety standards are inadequate, inconsistent, or unsafe.”

Patti Bacchus: A nervous new year for B.C. schools

by Patti Bacchus on January 8th, 2021 at 1:20 PM 1 of 4 2 of 4 I’m scared of COVID-19. I don’t want to get it, and I don’t want any of my loved ones getting it either. Nor do I want you or your loved ones to get it. Too many people are already grieving for those who have died from it, while others are coping with its long-term effects. At the beginning of the pandemic, one of our kids had just moved to Australia for a year and signed a lease on an apartment and lined up a job at a hotel. So much for that. When the prime minister summoned Canadians home last March, we told the (adult) kid he could quarantine at our home in Vancouver while we went to our place in the Gulf Islands. We stocked the fridge and freezer for him and boarded a ferry just as his plane was landing in Richmond.
