20-year sentence for defendant who 'gutted' man in motel parking lot

CROWN POINT — A Lake Criminal Court judge sentenced a Gary man Tuesday to 20 years for stabbing a man to death following a dispute in 2018 at a Merrillville motel over money for a prostitute. Laurence T. Richmond Jr., 35, was ordered to serve 15 years behind bars, four years in the Lake County Community Corrections alternative placement program and one year on probation. With credit for time already served, Richmond has another 10 years left to serve in prison, Judge Natalie Bokota said. Bokota said she believed Richmond felt remorse for killing 44-year-old Patrick Tangye Mbi on Feb. 6, 2018, but the brutality of the crime required a longer sentence.

Judge: 'No compassion' for Cedar Lake woman who killed father of four in crash

CROWN POINT — A Lake Criminal Court judge sentenced a woman Friday to a maximum sentence of one year in jail for causing a crash that killed a father of four and severely injured the man s passenger and the defendant. Megan A. Zyla, 25, of Cedar Lake, pleaded guilty in May to reckless driving, a class A misdemeanor, in connection with a head-on crash May 21, 2019, on U.S. 41, just south of St. John. Nick DeVries, 32, of Lowell, was killed and his co-worker Jordan Muscari was severely injured in the crash. Zyla also suffered severe injuries. Defense attorney Thomas Mullins said there was no admissible evidence in the case to suggest Zyla used alcohol or drugs in the hours leading up to the crash.
