'Always there for everything:' Region coaches honor mom, wives for Mother's Day

Courtney Pishkur is the daughter of arguably the most famous coach in the Region.
Her father, Dave Pishkur, has been Andrean s baseball coach for 42 years and is the winningest prep baseball coach in Indiana history. He s guided the 59ers to seven Class 3A state titles.
However, Courtney would like to make one thing clear this Mother s Day.
Her dad, as legendary as he is, couldn t do what he does alone. For years her mother and Dave s wife, Gretchen, made sure she was always there for everything involving Courtney and her brothers, Mark and Ryne.
It probably wasn t easy with my dad coaching. I mean, he still came to what he could, but she got all three of us to every sporting event every day, Courtney said. Both of my brothers played travel baseball, I played AAU (basketball), and I just don t remember her missing a gameÂ â ever. ....

Courtney Blakely, the nation's 10th leading scorer, among four Region natives named McDonald's All-American nominees | High School

Bishop Noll star Courtney Blakely had no clue about her latest recognition until the messages started rolling in.
Somebody texted my phone, and they were like, Congratulations, Courtney! and I was like, On what? with like five question marks because I was confused, Blakely said. Then I looked at my Instagram (account) and was like, Wow.
Blakely is one of four Region natives that were announced as McDonald s All-American Games nominees Thursday morning, accompanied by teammate Rose Fuentes, Michigan City s Trinity Thompson and Lowell s Christopher Mantis.
Throughout her senior campaign, Blakely led the state in scoring at 31.7 points per game and was the 10th leading scorer nationally, according to MaxPreps. ....

Then, it all came crashing down.
I knew something wasn t right for sure just because I couldn t really put too much pressure on (my left knee), Glass said. But for the first week, I didn t even know that (my left ACL) was torn, and our trainers were telling me that it might have been something with my hamstring. I didn t find out until about a week later when I took an MRI.
That s when they told me.
Glass said he sustained his season-ending knee injury after catching a pass and planting awkwardly in a Week 6 win at LaPorte on Sept. 25. He walked off the field under his own power thinking he would return, but when it was confirmed that Glass high school football career was over, he was heartbroken. ....
