Borderview Christian welcomes new youth, children's director

ELIZABETHTON — Borderview Christian Church, 1338 Bristol Highway, has named Sallie Biles as the church’s new youth and children’s director. Biles joined the ministry staff this month. She was born and raised in Johnson City and attended Science Hill High School, East Tennessee State University, and Emmanuel Christian Seminary at Milligan University. Sallie has a bachelor’s degree in social work as well as a master’s in divinity. Prior to coming to Borderview, Biles served as a social worker and the food programs director at Good Samaritan Ministries. In addition, she also completed an internship at the Department of Veterans Affairs in the chaplaincy department.

Buffalo Ridge Baptist Church, 197 Suncrest St., Gray: Bible study for all ages will begin at 10 a.m., followed by the morning service at 11 and the evening service at 6:30 on Sunday. Wednesday’s service will be held at 7 p.m. Nursery is available for all services. All services and Sunday school will be available online also. Buses will run. Borderview Christian Church, 1338 Bristol Highway, Elizabethton: The church will celebrate God and Country Day on Sunday, July 4, at 10:45 a.m. with a special service full of patriotic music, focusing on the God that blesses the USA. The adult choir ministry will sing and veterans will be recognized with a special gift. Scott Fisher, senior minister, will be preaching on the “God and Country” theme. There is no community block party planned this year, but plans are already gearing up for 2022.

ELIZABETHTON - Alfred “Al” E. King, 88, of Elizabethton, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, April 13, 2021. He was born in Avery County, NC and was the son of the late Clifford and Laura Wilson King. In addition to his parents, Al was preceded in death by his son Chris King; his brothers Ray and Ralph King; and his sisters Evie Hughes, Ava Hughes, and Nellie Faye Hoilman. Those left to cherish Al’s memory include his loving wife of 66 years, Margaret Winters King; children: Beverly (C.E.) King, Terry (Samantha) King, LaDonna King, and Tammy (Tommy) Keene; grandchildren Jared Deskins, Ryan Deskins, Michael Blevins, Mitchell Blevins, Dakota Rutherford, Kasey King, Karson King, Elijah King, Christianna King, and Laura Reigh King; 12 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Nola Barnette Sams

I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: ELIZABETHTON - Nola Barnette Sams, 91, Elizabethton, passed from this life unexpectedly on Thursday, March 11, 2021 at Johnson City Medical Center. Born March 17, 1929 in Johnson City, TN. to the late George and Wilma Adams Barnette, she married the love of her life, Fred Sams, Jr. in 1949 and lived in Elizabethton since that time. Fred preceded her in death in 1983 and she lived independently until the day of her death. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Pansy Brown, and a half-brother, Lawrence Honeycutt. Survivors include a daughter, Dathia Reynolds and son-in-law: Scott. Sisters include: LaVerne Gouge, Elizabethton, Selma Vicars, Johnson City and a brother, Ralph Barnette, Johnson City. Several nieces and nephews also survive and a special brother-in-law: Robert Sams.
