When Clash catches Celeste on a phone call she’s driving between two appointments. It’s been a hectic week – she’s recorded performances for both
Top Of The Pops and Jools Holland, managing our cover shoot in between. Gracious and patient on set, she remains virtually silent throughout, protecting her voice for two performances that will underline her status as a shining star within UK soul’s divine firmament.
Itâs almost a year to the day that Celeste Waite made an almighty splash at the 2020 Brit Awards, wowing an audience of Billie Eilish, Courtney Love, Stormzy and Harry Styles with a pin-drop version of her gothic jazz ballad âStrangeâ before picking up the hotly contested Rising Star gong. The following evening, still in something of a daze, Celeste found herself at another starry event, sitting next to Florence Welch at a Gucci show. For Florence â whoâd won the Rising Star gong in 2009, back when it was called the Criticâs Choice Award â it was like looking through a portal to the past.
Celeste is the third face of Clash 117.
The soulful vocalist opened 2020 on top of the world - the only trouble was, the world was about to change.
Forced to look inwards by the pandemic, she responded by amplifying her need to communicate, examining every facet of her being on a persuasive, gloriously soulful debut album.
Her journey is marked by self-examination, while her story is one that will resonate in each of our lives.
