Two horses died a barn fire in New York state but 58 were saved thanks to the efforts of rescuers.
Thanks to horsemen, the Elmont Fire Department and New York Racing Association (NYRA), the 58 horses were rescued from the blaze in a barn at Belmont Park, which started on Tuesday evening (13 April). Three people were treated for minor injuries.

A heroic effort from horsemen, the Elmont Fire Department and New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) security personnel saved the lives of 58 horses following a quick response to Tuesday s active fire in Barn 60 at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y.
Barn 60 s alarm and sprinkler system immediately notified NYRA s security personnel at Gate 6 at the onset of the fire. NYRA security notified the Elmont Fire Department, who were on the scene within minutes to extinguish the fire and secure the scene. The New York State Fire Marshal and officials from Nassau County are investigating the cause of the fire, which was not immediately apparent.
A tragic barn fire on Tuesday (April 13) at Belmont Park in New York has claimed the lives of two thoroughbred racehorses.
On Tuesday evening at approximately 6:05 p.m., the New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) responded to an active fire affecting Barn 60 at Belmont Park. NYRA security was joined by backstretch staff in rendering immediate assistance to the horses stabled in the barn at the time of the incident.
The fire was restricted to Barn 60 which holds stalls for horses under the care of trainers Wayne Potts and Jeffrey Englehart. A total of 58 horses were safely evacuated from the barn as a result of the immediate response by NYRA security, backstretch staff and the Elmont Fire Department.

ELMONT, N.Y. (AP) - The New York Racing Association said two horses died as the result of a fire Tuesday night on the backstretch at Belmont Park.
NYRA said it responded to a barn fire at 6:05 p.m. and that 58 of the 60 horses under the care of trainers Wayne Potts and Jeffrey Englehart were safely evacuated. Two of Potts’ horses died in the fire, according to NYRA, which reported no injuries to its employees or barn staff.
