Spruce Mountain directors consider initial changes to summer school policy

Read Article LIVERMORE Directors of Spruce Mountain Regional School Unit 73 on Thursday approved the first reading of policy changes that would allow more students to attend summer school. Changes include lowering the passing grade from 50 to 30 for eligibility, and removing the stipulation that students with 30 or more absences are not eligible. The policy is for students in kindergarten through grade eight. While reviewing the last trimester grades to tally how many of the 350 students at Spruce Mountain Middle School in Jay were failing at least one class, Principal Carolyn Luce got through the first 162 and realized that wasn’t a feasible list.

Community provides food, masks and more for Spruce Mountain schools

Read Article Judy Hamilton of Hartford poses with some of the almost 1,600 face masks she has stitched for Spruce Mountain Elementary School in Jay. Submitted photo REGION Long before the coronavirus pandemic struck, volunteers throughout Regional School District 73 were making a difference for students. While there have had to be some changes, even more is being done for students within the schools they attend now. “One thing about this community, it’s always been amazing, comes together in a time of crisis,” high school guidance counselor Chris Beaudion said at the Jan. 14 school board meeting. Judy Hamilton of Hartford has stitched almost 1,600 masks for students at the elementary school. She has made almost 6,000 masks to date and came to help the local school in a roundabout way.
