KOCHI: Jafar Malik, the new Ernakulam District Collector, assumed charge on Monday. He took charge from outgoing collector S Suhas. After taking over, Jafar said the district administration will unveil measures for the welfare of the marginalised sections in society. A special plan will be devised for students impacted by the lockdown, he said.

Segment continues to witness low voter turnout in polls
The reluctance of voters in Ernakulam Assembly constituency to cast their votes continues to baffle politicians as well as administrators.
While voters in most of the constituencies enthusiastically voted in the Assembly elections on April 6, the hesitancy of Ernakulam voters was reflected in polling figures. Going by the official poll data, 74.17% voters exercised their rights in the district. However, it was 65.9% in Ernakulam, which was in tune with the lower turnout trend during the 2019 bypoll and 2016 Assembly polls.

Single judge order to CRPF on Kothamangalam church A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court deferred till January 15 the further proceedings based on a single judge order directing the Central Reserve Police Force to take over the Kothamangalam Marthoman church if the Ernakulam District Collector did not comply with its earlier order this regard by January 8.
The Bench comprising Justice Alexander Thomas and Justice T.R. Ravi passed the order on an appeal filed by the State government against the single judge’s order. The single judge had passed the order on a contempt of court petition filed by the Orthodox faction against the Ernakulam District Collector for not complying with an earlier Hight Court directive.

In its order, the division bench observed it was the settled position in the law that interim orders cannot be issued in contempt cases.

KOCHI: The Kerala High Court on Thursday stayed a single judge bench order directing the CRPF to take possession of a church at nearby Kothamangalam.
A division bench issued the stay on an appeal by filed the state government challenging the December 8 order of the single judge.
Passing orders on a contempt petition, the judge had directed the CRPF to take over the church if the government failed to comply with its 2019 order granting possession of the church to the Orthodox faction before January 8.
