The savage murder of Ashanti Riley touched many of us. It led us to reflect upon the kind of society we have created and the citizens (social beings) we are cultivating.
Ashantiâs murder led the Prime Minister to talk about âthe monstersâ we are cultivating within our midst. Phyllis Bruce, another mother whose black son vanished on March 19, sympathised with Ashantiâs mother in her grief: âEven from one mother to another, I canât find the words to comfort her. But I would say to her, be strong. Hold on. Keep courage.â (Express, December 11).
Bruce was concerned about our national pain and quality of social and cultural life. Her eloquence reminded me of observations Hollis Liverpool made last week in a letter to the Prime Minister about the importance of publishing stories about local heroes and heroines and the sacrifices they have made to make us who we are.
