CANTON – Some students in the Canton City School District soon may be sitting closer to each other in the classroom. The Canton City school board on Wednesday unanimously approved an amended memorandum of understanding with its teachers union that allows the district to space students at least 3 feet apart in classrooms, instead of the previously required 6 feet. Superintendent Jeff Talbert said the adjustment reflects the latest guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and allows roughly 70 students to return to in-person learning for the last six weeks of the school year. Talbert said the families, who originally chose to learn online at home, have been seeking to return to in-person learning for months, but there hasn’t been enough space inside the classrooms to add them to the class while also keeping 6 feet of distance between every student. He said only those classrooms receiving students who were on the waitlist will be affected.
