Despite carrying out her entire term in a remote environment and navigating the impact of the recall efforts of former Associated Students President Daevionne Beasley on her office, External Vice President for Statewide Affairs Alia Sky believes that she was able to focus on and accomplish the pursuits she prioritized when first running for the position.Â

If youâve managed to make it through your time at UC Santa Barbara without ever having to delve deep into the enigmatic world of its administration or communicate with the distinguished and venerable aristocracy, then consider yourself lucky. It is not an experience I would recommend.Â
After many tedious hours digging through university records, researching public law and emailing unresponsive and irritable bureaucrats, the Young Democratic Socialists of America (YDSA) at UCSB discovered something that you probably could have guessed without putting yourself through any of the administrative bullshit.Â
Isla Vista Party Takes Home Executive Majority, Storke Party Claims the Most Senate Seats
Isla Vista Party will hold a majority within the Associated Students executive branch for the 2021-22 school year, with the newly founded Storke Party capturing one seat â the presidency.Â
The election, which was hosted in a Zoom webinar format as opposed to its traditional in-person location at the University Center Hub, garnered 125 viewers, according to Andrew Yan, elections board chair.Â

In its first year on the ballot, Storke Party edged out the Isla Vista Party by one senate seat, taking home a total 12 compared to Isla Vista Partyâs 11. Three seats were filled by independent candidates, two of whom were write-ins. No party retained a senate majority this election, as it would have taken at least 14 seats to do so.Â
The Daily Nexus endorses Carlos âAndyâ Ruiz â a fourth-year sociology major with the experience and vision to carry UCSB through its third presidency of the 2020-21 academic year â for Associated Students president in this weekâs special election.
Ruiz has been the deputy chief of staff for the External Vice President for Local Affairs (EVPLA) for the past two years.Â

Ruiz is running against Lea Toubian, a fourth-year political science and environmental studies double major. Former Associated Students (A.S.) President Daevionne Beasley resigned in October amid a sexual assault allegation and recall effort against him. Internal Vice President Tianna White stepped in as interim president shortly after until a special election could be held this quarter.Â
