Alexander Lippisch (left), designer of the first German jet, in 1953 presents a picture of the Wright Brothers’ first flight to Donald Hines, chairman of the Cedar Rapids Airport Commission. The Wrights began experimenting with flight when growing up in Cedar Rapids, and Lippisch said he drew inspiration from seeing Orville Wright fly his airplane in 1908 during Wright’s European tour showing off his and his brother’s invention.
