His will contains bequests for several local charities, with the first announced Tuesday.
The United Way Hastings and Prince Edward, Habitat for Humanity and Gleaners Food Bank will share nearly $53,000.
Despite not being a public figure, Vachon – nicknamed Rogie – “still cared deeply for the community and this was his way of giving back,” said his longtime close friend, Chris Malette, a former Intelligencer city editor and reporter-photographer. Now a city councillor, he is the executor of Rogie’s estate.
