Mayo Clinic, Kaiser put $100M toward hospital-at-home care

Mayo Clinic and Kaiser Permanente announced this week that they will collaborate to build capacity for hospital-at-home care.   The partnership will begin with a reported $100 million combined investment in Medically Home Group, which provides a technology platform aimed at allowing providers to address a range of acute clinical conditions safely in a patient s home. Rarely in the history of medicine do we see such a perfect alignment of policy, technology and cultural transformation converging to produce a new care paradigm like acute care at home, said Dr. John Halamka, president of Mayo Clinic Platform, in a statement.    We can advance the well-being of patients by catalyzing innovative, collaborative, knowledge-driven platform business models to redefine the standard of high-acuity care for patients with serious or complex illnesses who currently receive care in hospitals, Halamka continued.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) released annual payment rules, including the FY 2022 proposed payment rule for inpatient rehabilitation facilities (IRFs). Administration CMS Released Proposed FY 2022 IRF Rule CMS estimates that the proposed rule would increase payments to IRFs by 1.8%, or approximately $160 million, nationwide in FY 2022 over FY 2021. The rule also proposes adjustment to the IRF quality reporting program, including modifying the number of quarters used to report on certain quality measures due to the public health emergency. Intermountain, Ascension push for permanent CMS home care reimbursement changes iStock Photo Two large hospital systems and several home-based care companies are partnering to lobby Congress to make permanent COVID-19 era changes to CMS home healthcare reimbursement. Intermountain Healthcare and Ascension are forming the Moving Health Home Coalition with several home-based care companies including hospital-at-home provider DispatchHealth, home-based complex care provider Signify Health, home health provider Elara Caring, value-based complex care provider Landmark Health and senior home care service provider Home Instead. The coalition has five big policy priorities that it will lobby Congress and other policymakers to open up home-based care reimbursement after the pandemic has ended.
