Friday, May 7, 2021  Vice-Chancellor of The University of the West Indies (The UWI), Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, who is currently in the final year of his six-year contract, has been reappointed by the institution’s highest governing body, the University Council, for a second six-year term.   The Council which met virtually on Friday, April 30, for its annual business meeting, approved the renewal of Vice-Chancellor Beckles’ term based on an appraisal of his performance. This included his leadership of the regional university during the throes of pandemic, which saw the University rising to the expectations of its stakeholders, described by the Vice-Chancellor himself as “The UWI’s finest hour.”

Here is a letter to the editor published in “… [This award] has come at a good time to stimulate regional governments and non-governmental organisations to refocus our energies on the issue of reparations. Caricom’s historic decision in 2013 to put reparations for chattel slavery and native genocide on its agenda gave impetus to this struggle for justice globally. Dr Beckles has to be especially credited for his role in keeping the issue alive among governments in the region, some of whom have come under considerable pressure from former colonial powers …” The Emancipation Support Committee of Trinidad and Tobago extends congratulations to Dr Hilary Beckles, the vice-chancellor of the University of the West Indies, for bringing another international distinction to the regional institution and gaining further international acclaim for other achievements.

On the day of the United States national holiday when the life and work of the late civil rights leader Dr Martin Luther King Jr were celebrated, the US National Action Network (NAN) presented Sir Hilary with its Martin Luther King Jr 2021 Global Award For Peace And Freedom, at a virtual breakfast.

As Loop Jamaica reports, Sir Hilary Beckles is recognized for his global advocacy, academic scholarship and intellectual leadership in support of social justice, institutional equity, and economic development for marginalized and oppressed ethnicities and nations. For this reason, the US National Action Network will honor Dr. Beckles (and Dr. Anthony Fauci) with the Martin Luther King Award January 18, 2021. Reverend Al Sharpton, President and Founder of the US National Action Network (NAN), has announced that the organisation’s Dr Martin Luther King Jr Day awards will be conferred on Professor Sir Hilary Beckles and Dr Anthony Fauci at the annual breakfast event on MLK Day, January 18, 2021.
