Egypt Prosecutor Will Appeal Acquittal
01/11/2021 Egypt (International Christian Concern) – Egypt’s prosecutor will open an appeal of the December acquittal of three men who were charged with stripping an elderly Christian woman, reports Ahram News. An official statement was released by Egypt’s Prosecutor-General Hamada al-Sawy on Sunday.
Suad Thabet is a Christian woman in her 70s who was targeted five years ago during a mob attack against the Christian community in the village of al-Karm. Her family was specifically targeted by the mob, who stripped her of her clothes. She has faced substantial pressure to drop her pursuit of justice following the incident, but has remained steadfast.

Given the history of violent targeted persecution against the Egyptian church, particularly on holidays, it is often time filled with a combination of joy and nervousness. This year, Coptic Christmas falls the day before Friday prayers, which is often the day when attacks against churches and Christian communities occur.
In the weeks leading up to Coptic Christmas, Egypt announced a series of churches that have received legalization. Egypt has banked its international reputation regarding religious freedom issues on church legalization. Hundreds of churches have been legalized since 2016, but thousands remain unrecognized.

These charges were brought after they participated in a mob attack against the Christian community in the village of al-Karm. They were accused of attacking, beating, and publically stripping Suad.
