Andover to consider changes to pension

By Madeline Hughes mhughes@andovertownsman.com Apr 1, 2021 1 hr ago The Andover Retirement Board is deciding if part-time employees will continue to be eligible for pensions from the town. Currently, anyone working more than 20 hours a week who is a permanent employee is eligible for a pension. The proposed change would bar any future part-time employees who work 35 hours or fewer from receiving a pension. This potential change comes at the same time voters are being asked to borrow a $185 million pension obligation bond to pay off the unfunded pension liability, which came about because of decades of paying too little into the pension system.

Editorial: State must protect pregnant workers

The Herald Bulletin Editorial Board Apr 1, 2021 2 hrs ago A woman shouldn’t have to choose between her job and her health or the health of her unborn child. Thirty states have laws to address this concern, requiring employers to offer pregnant workers accommodations such as additional breaks, help with manual labor and schedule modifications. Indiana has no such law. While many Hoosier employers do the right thing by voluntarily providing accommodations for pregnant women, others demand that pregnant employees continue to work under the same rules and conditions as other workers. A bill that would have fixed the problem failed in the Republican-dominated state Senate in 2020. This year, two additional bills died without a hearing. Members of the GOP supermajority contend that such legislation would place an outsized burden on employers, particularly small businesses.

FBI arrests hunting ranch employee in connection with Capitol riot

HEPPNER — The agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation couldn’t tell John Flynn too much, only that they were there because of “people that were at the Capitol,” he said. Early on Tuesday, March 23, agents had been snooping around the headquarters of Ruggs Ranch, a 100,000-acre hunting preserve outside of Heppner in Morrow County that’s described on its website as “Where World Class Bird Hunting & Luxurious Lodging Meet.” The agents told Flynn they were waiting for a friend who was out hunting. Flynn, the ranch owner, didn’t recognize the name they provided. He asked them to leave.
