Southern Governors Summit: Okechukwu appeals for caution, canvasses dual restructuring

The Director-General of the Voice of Nigeria (VON), Mr. Osita Okechukwu has called on Nigerians to look beyond the frenzy of restructuring as canvassed by the Southern Governors’ summit in Asaba, Delta State.
Okechukwu, a chieftain of ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), warned that conceding more powers to the Governors would put the country’s democracy in grave danger.
In a statement on Thursday, the VON boss advised Nigerians to tread carefully and not to see the socio-economic and security challenges facing the country as a reason to give more powers to the Governors who are already mismanaging their powers as Emperors. ....

The Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola has reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring the good conduct of statutory marriages in the country.

Aregbesola, who made this known at the 2021 National Stakeholders’ Conference on the Administration of Statutory Marriage, on Friday, in Abuja, said this had become imperative due to the prevailing challenges associated with marriages in the country.
Represented by the Permanent Secretary, in the ministry, Dr Shuaib Belgore, the minister noted that the ministry was responsible for the conduct of statutory marriages in Nigeria, as well as licensing of public places of worship for the celebration of statutory marriages. ....

Supreme Court Nullifies Makinde's Dissolution of Oyo LGs

The Supreme Court, yesterday held that Oyo State Governor, Mr. Seyi Makinde, lacked the constitutional powers to dissolve the tenure of elected Chairmen and Councilors of the Oyo State Local Government Councils.
Similarly, the Supreme Court at a virtual sitting, yesterday, held as illegal and unconstitutional the dissolution of the Katsina State Local Government Councils.
Delivering judgment in the appeal brought by the Association of Local Government Councils of Nigeria (ALGON) against Oyo State Government and Makinde, the five-man panel of Justices of the apex court, held that Makinde lacked legal powers to dissolve the councils.
Makinde had on May 29, 2019, ordered the dissolution and sack of chairmen and councilors of all 33 Local Government Areas (LGAs), as well as 35 Local Council Development Areas, (LCDAs), in the state. ....
