Minnesota State Mavericks Season Review Following this accomplishment, the Mavericks won their first NCAA game in school history, defeating Quinnipiac in overtime. They shut out Minnesota University in the NCAA West Final and reached the Frozen Four for the first time. Minnesota State eventually fell to St. Cloud, as a goal late in regulation would end the Mavericks hopes of advancing. This season, filled with quarantines, uncertainty, and unprecedented success, was one for the history books. Future Minnesota State University teams will be sure to try and model this one. The 20-year-old forward known to his teammates as Goal Caufield didn t hesitate to make an impact at the next level, scoring in his professional debut Friday with the American Hockey League s Laval Rocket, Montreal s minor league affiliate. Caufield, who signed with the Montreal Canadiens organization after the season, completed his sophomore campaign with the Big Ten regular-season champion Badgers with 30 goals and 22 assists for 52 points in 31 games. The Stevens Point, Wis., native led the nation in goals by 11 and points by five. His 11 power-play goals also were a nation s best, and his five game-winning goals were tied for third.
