Masters and Lekomtsev sweep gold in World Cup races in Slovenia

Imagen Oksana Masters took six gold medals in six races at the Planica 2021 World Cup in Slovenia ⒸAdrian Stykowski/World Para Snow Sports By Lena Smirnova | For World Para Snow Sports USA’s Oksana Masters and Russia’s Vladislav Lekomtsev finished the World Para Nordic Skiing World Cup in Planica, Slovenia undefeated as they grabbed double gold in the last two Para biathlon races. The season’s first World Cup, which took place from 3 to 10 March, was made up of three cross-country and three biathlon races. The biathlon individual and sprint events concluded the competition. Masters and Lekomtsev finished the World Cup with six gold medals after missing only one shot in each of the two final events.

Liudmyla Liashenko led the charge with two gold medals, in the sprint and short-distance races, and a silver in Sunday’s middle-distance event.  Oleksandra Kononova picked up the gold in the middle distance, to add to her two silver from the earlier races, while Yuliia Batenkova-Bauman took a third cross-country bronze.

Giuseppe Romele starts off third World Cup season with big surprise win

The Italian sit skier was 12th in the cross-country ranking last season, but managed to start this season with a victory, his career’s first, over the biggest star in his class.  “I am happy about the competition,” Romele said. “But I will not celebrate yet. After the last race, I will celebrate.” The World Cup in Planica, Slovenia opened with the cross-country short distance on Wednesday (3 March) and sprint races on Thursday, the day that marked one year to go to the Beijing 2022 Paralympic Winter Games.

Planica and Kranjska Gora, Slovenia will host three cross-country and three biathlon races from 3  to 10 March to start the 2020-21 World Cup season, with another World Cup to follow in Vuokatti, Finland later this month. A total of 91 athletes from 15 nations will be competing in Slovenia.
