Ophthalmologist: Smartphones may help in early detection of glaucoma

TODAY March 17, 2021 The Group Managing Director of Eleta Eye Institute, Dr Benedictus Ajayi, says that smart phones may help in carrying out eye tests for early warning signs of glaucoma, the leading cause of irreversible blindness in Nigeria. Ajayi, a consultant ophthalmologist, stated this in an interview with newsmen on Wednesday in Ibadan. Newsmen reports that Ajayi spoke on the sideline of the just- concluded World Glaucoma Week, 2021, with the theme: “The World is Bright, Save your Sight”. He described glaucoma as an eye disease often associated with elevated intraocular pressure through which damage to the eye optic nerve could lead to loss of vision and permanent blindness.

Vinod Bhat, executive vice-president, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal, who inaugurated the group, said that the group will be a common platform to exchange information and support each other. He suggested to develop glaucoma awareness booklets in Kannada and English to educate people.

Health alert: Ghana is 2ndGlaucoma endemic country in the world Dr Emmanual Tenkorang, the Ashanti Regional The Ashanti Regional Ophthalmologist of the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Kwadwo Amoah has revealed that Ghana has a higher burden of glaucoma, placing her second behind St Lucia and Barbados in a global ranking. He has, therefore, admonished Ghanaians to examine their sights from time to time to curtail the chances of contracting the irreversible disease. The Ashanti Regional Ophthalmologist of the Ghana Health Service , Dr. Kwadwo Amoah in a post media interaction . According to him, Ghana in 2015 conducted a survey under the umbrella of National Blindness and Visual impairment Survey, where it came to the fore that 700,000 people who report to hospitals have been affected with glaucoma, a data which is devoid of people who live in far-flung areas who are blind and the cause of their blindness is unknown.
