Scientists Bring a 24,000-Year-Old Frozen "Zombie" Back to Life

Scientists in a Russian lab have brought back to life miniature “zombies” that were frozen about 3.5 meters (11.5 feet) beneath the Siberian permafrost for 24,000 years (in the Alazeya River). These multicellular microscopic creatures, which are called bdelloid rotifers (or wheel animals), have been living in freshwater locations for approximately 50 million years. Rotifers. Read more »

Animal Revived After Surviving 24,000 Years Frozen In Siberian Permafrost

Animal Revived After Surviving 24,000 Years Frozen In Siberian Permafrost by : Emily Brown on : 08 Jun 2021 09:38 Michael Plewka/PA Images A microscopic animal known as a bdelloid rotifer has been revived after being frozen for 24,000 years in Siberian permafrost.  Russian scientists found the multi-celled organism in a core of frozen soil extracted with a drilling rig from the Alayeza River in the Russian Arctic, after which they allowed it to thaw. Advert The research, published this week in the journal Current Biology, revealed that after spending thousands of years in a state of frozen animation known as crytobiosis, the animal was able to reproduce asexually.
