War monuments and memorials have long been divisive topics in Loudoun County, but on Wednesday came a decision on which people of differing backgrounds and political parties could get behind.
The World War I plaque in Leesburg that racially segregates 30 soldiers will no longer list white and Black soldiers separately after the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors voted to replace it.
On Dec. 9, the board voted unanimously to move forward with the action after holding a public hearing. The change is nearly 100 years in the making.
Supervisor Mike Turner (D-Ashburn), who made the motion, brought forward the item after garnering support from the veterans community, including the Loudoun County VFW Post 1177, the American Legion Post 34 and Loudoun County Foreign War Memorial Trust Fund Advisory Committee.
âThis is a really positive message, and Iâm very pleased to do this and proud to be involved with it,â Turner said.
