Voting open for the Co-op of the Year Awards

Co-operatives UK has announced the shortlisted co-ops for the Co-op of the Year Awards. This year’s awards aim to highlight co-operative enterprises that have shown a particular commitment to the co-operative principles, and those who have stepped up to support their communities during the pandemic.
A total of 23 co-ops and five co-op councils have been shortlisted for the national awards, which is sponsored by the Co-operative Bank.
The awards feature five categories.
The Leading Co-op of the Year Award is for co-ops with a turnover above £30 million. The shortlisted co-ops in this category are:

It is said that strength comes in numbers, and that is what award-winning food producer Angharad Underwood found during the pandemic.
When Covid-19 hit last year, Ms Underwood was faced with having to temporarily close her business, The Preservation Society.
Based in the Welsh town of Chepstow, right beside the English border in south east Wales, she makes jams, chutneys and other preserves.
With other local food producers in the same precarious position, 25 of them decided that instead of shutting up shop, they would pool their resources and join together.

New findings suggest the ethical, member-owned enterprises are more resilient surviving economic shocks compared to other firms. One-to-one financial and management advice, workshops, training and mentoring form part of the package being delivered by network Co-operatives UK and The Hive, the programme it has developed in partnership with the bank. Since 2016 the bank has put £1.7 million into the scheme, helping more than 1000 co-operatives and groups.
